Romualdez gains overwhelming support for reelection as House Speaker

Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez appears firmly positioned to retain the Speakership in the upcoming 20th Congress, with more than 280 lawmakers already backing his bid, House leaders confirmed on Thursday.

House Assistant Majority Leader Ernesto Dionisio Jr. revealed that at least 283 members have signed a manifesto expressing their support for Romualdez’s continued leadership. “That is an overwhelming majority… This manifesto shows strong support [for] the leadership of Speaker Martin,” he said in a GMA News Online report.

Asked if there’s any serious rival challenging Romualdez’s reelection, Dionisio replied, “Parang malabo.”

While the manifesto reflects wide consensus, it has also exposed divisions. Cebu Representative and Deputy Speaker Duke Frasco—who did not sign the document—was recently expelled by the National Unity Party (NUP), which supports Romualdez. Frasco has publicly stated he would rather back Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco or incoming Negros Occidental Rep. Albee Benitez for the role.

Fellow House Assistant Majority Leader Zia Adiong acknowledged that lawmakers are free to support whomever they choose. “Wala pong pilitan rito,” he said, but emphasized that Romualdez’s leadership has brought “stability and efficiency” to the chamber. “If it is not broken, why fix it?” he added.

During a fellowship with incoming House members, both Adiong and Dionisio insisted that Romualdez refrained from politicking. “The Speaker was there mainly to give guidance and show support to the new members… there was no talk about leadership positions,” Dionisio said.

The issue of Vice President Sara Duterte’s possible impeachment also remained untouched during the gathering. “The atmosphere last night was jovial… We did not talk about impeachment there, it wasn’t mentioned at all,” Adiong clarified.

Romualdez, a key political ally and cousin of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., is currently seeking a second term as House Speaker.
