PGH breaks ground on 16-story specialty center to boost public healthcare

The Philippine General Hospital (PGH) has officially broken ground on a landmark 16-story pediatric and adult specialty center aimed at expanding access to critical care for Filipinos.

PGH Director Dr. Gerardo Legaspi said the upcoming facility will be equipped with 450 beds, state-of-the-art emergency and operating rooms for children, intensive care units, and comprehensive outpatient clinics.

“This new Specialty Center reflects our unwavering commitment to strengthen public healthcare infrastructure,” Legaspi said in a press release. “It will allow us to better serve patients who rely on PGH for complex and urgent medical needs.”

Beyond clinical services, the building will also feature support spaces including a modern dietary department serving the entire hospital, dormitories, dining areas, a canteen, and a 300-seat convention center.

The first phase of the project has a projected cost of P675.5 million, with completion expected by 2027.

First Lady Louise “Liza” Araneta-Marcos led the groundbreaking ceremony, joined by Health Secretary Dr. Teodoro Herbosa, Public Works and Highways Secretary Manuel Bonoan, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan, UP President Angelo Jimenez, and UP Manila Chancellor Dr. Michael Tee.
