Filipinos in US warned against misinformation on renouncing Philippine citizenship

The Philippine embassy in Washington has issued a strong reminder to Filipinos in the United States not to fall for false social media posts spreading fear and confusion about travel restrictions and dual citizenship.

In a public advisory released Thursday, the embassy emphasized that “there have been no changes in U.S. government policies” regarding the travel rights of Filipino dual citizens or green card holders.

The warning comes in response to misleading online posts falsely suggesting that new travel restrictions have been imposed on Filipino immigrants in the U.S. Some of these posts have even urged Filipinos to consider giving up their Philippine citizenship—an action the embassy strongly warned against.

“Please do not make legal decisions, such as renouncing your Philippine citizenship, based on social media content,” the embassy stated. “Renunciation of Philippine citizenship is a serious, irreversible legal action.”

Filipinos were urged to rely only on trusted and official government channels for any immigration or travel-related updates. The embassy also encouraged the community to “report false information to the platform where it is published” and avoid sharing unverified claims.
