As the Middle East reels from a dramatic surge in violence between Iran, Israel, and the United States, Pope Leo XIV issued a powerful plea for peace, warning of a looming catastrophe if global leaders fail to act.
“We must stop the tragedy of war before it becomes an irreparable abyss,” the Pope declared during his Sunday address, as quoted by Anadolu. His words came in response to a wave of deadly missile exchanges and airstrikes across the region, including recent U.S. attacks on three Iranian nuclear sites and retaliatory strikes by Tehran on Israeli cities.
Expressing concern over the growing humanitarian toll, Pope Leo XIV lamented that the plight of civilians, especially in Gaza and other conflict zones, risks being overshadowed by the escalation.
“Today more than ever, humanity cries out and pleads for peace,” he said, urging world leaders to replace aggression with responsibility and common sense. “There are no distant wars when human dignity is at stake.”
He emphasized that warfare, rather than resolving disputes, deepens wounds that may take generations to heal. “War does not solve problems; it amplifies them,” he added, calling attention to the trauma borne by grieving mothers, frightened children, and an entire generation stripped of their future.
In a direct appeal to the international community, Pope Leo XIV insisted that “diplomacy must silence the weapons” and that peaceful actions, not “violence and bloodshed,” should determine the future of nations.
“Everyone is called to respond—especially those with responsibilities—to prevent humanity from walking a path with no return,” he said.
Tensions reached a boiling point over the weekend after U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. Tehran swiftly retaliated with missile attacks on Israeli territory, prompting a sharp rise in casualties on both sides.
Israel has reported at least 25 deaths and hundreds of injuries since Iran’s strikes began, while Iran’s Health Ministry says 430 people have been killed and over 3,500 wounded from Israeli attacks.
Iran has since appealed to the United Nations for an emergency Security Council session, seeking international condemnation of the U.S. strikes and accountability for alleged breaches of international law.
