The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has extended financial aid to the family of four-year-old Malia Kates Yuchen Masongsong, who was killed in a tragic vehicular crash at the NAIA Terminal 1 departure area on May 4, 2025.
OWWA Administrator Arnel “PY” Caunan personally handed over the assistance to OFW Danmark Masongsong—Malia’s father—on May 22 at the OWWA Center in Pasay City. The financial aid, reportedly amounting to P500,000, was meant to help the family rebuild after the devastating loss.
However, while the original Facebook post by OWWA mentioned the specific amount, the figure was later removed just hours after it went live. Despite the edit, the original amount remains visible in the post’s edit history—a detail that did not go unnoticed by netizens.
Malia was accompanying her family at the airport to bid farewell to her father when a black SUV sped toward the terminal entrance, killing her and injuring her mother and cousin. Her father had just stepped inside the terminal moments before the incident.
The 47-year-old driver claimed he panicked when another vehicle cut him off, but CCTV footage reportedly contradicted his statement. His driver’s license was suspended as authorities launched a deeper investigation.
Malia was laid to rest in Lipa City on May 11. Her father, still grieving, shared that she had once asked him to take her to school—an innocent dream left unfulfilled.
