Three Filipino cardinals take solemn oath in Sistine Chapel for Conclave 2025

Three Filipino cardinals have officially taken their solemn oaths inside the iconic Sistine Chapel, joining 133 cardinal electors in the highly anticipated Conclave 2025 to elect the next pope.

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, was among the first to take his oath. Tagle, who served as Archbishop of Manila before being called to Rome by Pope Francis in 2019, is widely recognized for his pastoral leadership and global influence within the Catholic Church.

Alongside him, Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula stood in the heart of the Sistine Chapel to take his oath. Known for his dedication to social justice and spiritual leadership, Advincula is among the cardinal electors who will choose the successor of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, after 12 years as the leader of the Catholic Church.

Completing the trio is Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and Bishop of Kalookan. David, who was among the last batch of cardinals appointed by Pope Francis, is a vocal advocate for the marginalized and a respected voice in the Philippine Church.
