Brazilian nun, world’s oldest person, dies at 116

Inah Canabarro Lucas, a Brazilian nun recognized as the world’s oldest living person, has passed away at the age of 116, her religious community confirmed on Wednesday.

Lucas, who belonged to the Congregation of Teresian Sisters in Porto Alegre, held the global longevity title since January after the death of Japan’s Tomiko Itooka, who was also 116 at the time.

The congregation paid tribute to Lucas, honoring “the dedication and devotion” she showed throughout her life of service.

Born on June 8, 1908—though she herself had claimed it was May 27—Lucas credited her long life to her faith. In 2018, on her 110th birthday, she received a blessing from Pope Francis, who passed away earlier this week at age 88.

According to the US-based Gerontological Research Group and longevity tracker LongeviQuest, the new titleholder is 115-year-old Ethel Caterham from Surrey, England.
