Elderly father undergoes wrong surgery while waiting for son’s operation

A hospital in Kota, India, has become the center of attention after a mix-up led to an elderly man receiving surgery meant for another patient.

The confusion occurred on April 12 at a medical college hospital when Jagdish, who has facial paralysis and cannot speak, accompanied his son Manish for a scheduled leg operation. While waiting outside during his son’s procedure, Jagdish was accidentally taken to another operating room when staff called out for a different patient with the same name.

The elder Jagdish, unable to communicate verbally, raised his hand when he heard his name called. Without proper identity verification, medical staff proceeded to make an incision in his hand for a dialysis fistula procedure—a surgery intended to connect an artery and vein for another patient who required dialysis treatment.

Manish only discovered the error after his own surgery was completed, finding to his shock that his father had undergone an unnecessary procedure due to the name coincidence.
