A barangay kagawad in New Lucena, Iloilo, was fatally stabbed while trying to pacify a commotion involving a vendor and a man accused of harassment, authorities confirmed Tuesday.
According to a report from GMA Regional TV Balitanghali, the 50-year-old official was responding to a disturbance after a 36-year-old man allegedly harassed a female vendor. The situation quickly escalated when other vendors confronted the suspect.
CCTV footage showed the suspect running while being chased by two men, one of whom was armed with a knife. In the attempt to intervene, the kagawad was stabbed in the abdomen.
Police said the suspect, who is now in custody, claimed he did not mean to kill the victim and only acted out of panic after being ganged up on.
The suspect is facing a homicide complaint.
