Solo parent overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were the center of a heartfelt tribute on April 22, 2025, during a Kalinga Wellness Activity hosted by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) at the AKSYON Center in Makati City. Held in celebration of National Solo Parents Week, the event highlighted the strength and sacrifices of OFW solo parents with the support of various government agencies and the 12 official candidates of Miss Universe Philippines 2025.
“Si Pangulong Marcos, noong unang-una niyang nakadaupang-palad si Secretary Toots Ople, ang binigyang pansin niya ay ang OFW families, bago pa man ang ating mga OFWs,” said Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac, who led the initiative. He underscored the administration’s focus on extending protection and care not just to OFWs but to their families left behind.
The event offered counseling, psychosocial support, and wellness services in partnership with TESDA, DTI, OFW Hospital, and OFBank. Secretary Cacdac also reiterated that these services were aligned with the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act (RA 11861). “Nagkaroon tayo ng patakaran para bigyan ng proteksyon ang mga OFW solo parents. Kabilang dito ang pagpapadali ng mga proseso dahil alam namin na gusto n’yong igugol ang bakasyon n’yo sa inyong mga anak at mga mahal sa buhay,” he said.
In a symbolic show of support, Miss Universe PH 2025 candidates sat with solo parent OFWs and their children for a Kumustahan session, where they listened to stories of struggle and perseverance. The beauty queens praised the parents’ unwavering resilience, finding inspiration in their courage.
DMW Undersecretary Patricia Yvonne M. Caunan assured OFW solo parents that the government stands firmly behind them. “Wag na wag n’yong mararamdaman na mag-isa kayo. Lagi kayong may tahanan sa DMW at may kakampi sa Miss Universe Philippines,” she said.
For Jonalie Sto. Tomas, a reintegrating OFW from Taguig, the event brought not only encouragement but a sense of community. “Nagkaroon po kami ng pag-asa, malaking tulong po ang mga programa ng DMW. Nagpapasalamat po ako na malaman na kahit hindi kami pinalad noon, ay may mga tao pala na bukas ang mga palad na makatulong sa amin,” she shared.
The event was organized by the DMW-NCR and the National Reintegration Center for OFWs, in collaboration with Miss Universe Philippines.
