Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has started testing a new electric bus on Route F13, marking another step in the city’s push for sustainable and smart public transport solutions.
The pilot route connects Al Quoz Bus Depot to major city landmarks including Burj Khalifa, The Palace Downtown Hotel, and Dubai Fountain, before ending at the Dubai Mall Metro Bus Stop (South).
The 12-meter-long Volvo-manufactured bus carries up to 76 passengers and boasts the largest battery capacity in the RTA fleet so far—470 kWh—allowing it to travel up to 370 kilometers on a full charge. It also features next-generation technology like mirrorless high-definition camera systems, a transparent head-up display, and top-tier air conditioning designed for Dubai’s extreme heat.
“This trial enables us to evaluate the vehicle’s performance in real operating conditions and helps shape future bus specifications,” said Marwan Al Zarooni, Director of Buses at RTA’s Public Transport Agency.
He added that the smart systems in the bus will help gather data on emissions reduction, energy efficiency, and how well the bus copes with Dubai’s summer weather. The initiative supports RTA’s goal to transition all public transport to zero-emission vehicles by 2050.
