Yo-yo enthusiasts converge in Philippines for 2023 national showdown

The 2023 Philippine National YoYo Contest wrapped up in a display of jaw-dropping talent and skill in SM City Marikina on September 16 and 17.

Yo-yo enthusiasts from across the nation, including from as far as Dumaguete, flocked to the event, eager to demonstrate their abilities in both the amateur and pro divisions.

Adding a touch of international prestige to the event was the presence of world-renowned yo-yo master Polo Garbkamol from Thailand.

Garbkamol not only served as a judge but also showcased his awe-inspiring skills, affirming the Philippines’ burgeoning reputation in the global yo-yo community.

The amateur division featured a range of contestants from young beginners to experienced teenagers, each bringing their own unique flair and passion to the stage.

Ryan Robillos and Sotto Jasper were crowned champions of the 1A Amateur Division and the 1A Amateur X-Division, respectively, with performances that signaled promising futures in the world of yo-yoing.

Following the amateur division was the main event, the pro division, which saw the country’s best yo-yo artists compete for the national title.

The fierce competition highlighted gravity-defying aerial stunts and intricate string manipulations that had the audience on the edge of their seats.

Ultimately, Aldrin Marapao triumphed in the 1A Pro Division, followed by wins from Kenneth Santiago, Prince Montecalvo, Dave Solitario, and Miggy Hizzon in the subsequent pro divisions.

These champions have now earned the opportunity to represent the Philippines at the 2024 World YoYo Contest.

Aside from the divisional contests, the event honored Glenn Angeles, Jay Nolan, and Edmund San Antonio with the National Yoyo Master Award, celebrating their invaluable contributions to the local yo-yo community.

This prestigious award recognizes individuals who have dedicated themselves to advancing the art of yo-yoing in the Philippines, shaping the local scene and inspiring the next generation of enthusiasts.
