Dubai hospital removes woman’s uterus without any cuts on her belly

A 56-year-old woman in Dubai has become one of the latest beneficiaries of a groundbreaking, scar-free surgical procedure at Aster Hospital Al Qusais. The hospital recently performed a hysterectomy using a minimally invasive method known as Vaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (vNOTES), making it one of the few facilities in the UAE to offer the advanced technique.

Ms. Sarojadevi Selvaraja, an Indian national, had been struggling with irregular postmenopausal bleeding for over two years. After a more severe episode in January this year, doctors discovered early-stage precancerous changes in her uterus. Given her age and medical history—including high blood pressure and previous gynecological procedures—doctors advised a hysterectomy.

“I was initially worried about having surgery, but the doctors reassured me about the benefits of this advanced approach,” Ms. Sarojadevi shared. “With no visible scars, little pain, and a quick recovery, I felt at ease and deeply appreciated the care and expertise of Dr. Fathima Safa, Dr. Aysha Salam, and the entire medical team.”

Led by Dr. Fathima Safa, Specialist in Obstetrics & Gynecology, the team opted for vNOTES—a technique that eliminates the need for external incisions. Instead, the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries are removed through the natural vaginal opening using specialized instruments and a tiny camera.

“vNOTES is the future of minimally invasive procedures,” said Dr. Safa. “It combines the benefits of traditional vaginal surgery with the precision of modern techniques. This results in quicker recovery, less pain, and no visible scars.”

Dr. Aysha Salam from Aster Hospital Sharjah added, “This technique is a game-changer for women who need gynecologic surgery. It shortens recovery time, reduces post-surgery discomfort, and significantly improves overall patient experience.”

Ms. Sarojadevi was discharged just a day after her surgery and was able to resume her daily routine soon after—a far cry from the weeks-long recovery often required for traditional procedures.
