Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon on Monday expressed frustration over a recent power interruption at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), stressing that even a five-minute outage is unacceptable and must be resolved swiftly.
“Five minutes is too long, unacceptable. The generator should activate within a minute,” Dizon said in a PNA report.
The power disruption occurred on Sunday across all three NAIA terminals—Terminal 1 lost power at 7:40 a.m. and was restored by 7:45 a.m., Terminal 2 experienced an outage at 7:24 a.m. and resumed operations by 7:48 a.m., while Terminal 3 was affected at 8 a.m. and regained power by 8:01 a.m.
Dizon commended the New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) for working on a long-term fix, including the possibility of directly connecting to the national grid to meet the airport’s high electricity demand.
Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager Eric Ines attributed the incident to a Meralco power tripping that affected the entire airfield. He assured that NNIC general manager Lito Alvarez and a Meralco emergency response team are on standby to address similar issues immediately.
Dizon emphasized the urgency of the matter, hoping that corrective measures will be put in place to prevent future occurrences.
