Employers must cover flight costs for domestic workers under UAE law

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has outlined employer obligations regarding domestic workers’ travel expenses and leave entitlements.

According to a Gulf Today report, citing the MoHRE, employers must cover the cost of a round-trip ticket for domestic workers returning home for annual leave every two years. However, if both parties agree to end or not renew the contract after the leave, the employer is only responsible for a one-way ticket.

The ministry also clarified that either the employer or the domestic worker can terminate the contract if the other fails to meet their obligations. If an employer terminates the worker without cause, they must provide a return ticket and settle any outstanding dues. However, if the domestic worker resigns after probation due to personal reasons, they are responsible for their return costs. If the worker was recruited directly, they must cover the expense unless unable to do so, in which case the employer takes responsibility. If hired through an agency, the recruitment office must cover the costs.

Domestic workers are entitled to 30 days of paid annual leave per year. If their service is between six months and a year, they receive two days off per month. Employers can decide when the leave starts and may divide it into two periods if necessary.

Additionally, domestic workers are entitled to 30 days of sick leave annually, with the first 15 days paid in full and the next 15 at half pay. A valid medical report is required, and no compensation is provided if the illness results from misconduct.
