Dubai Police have rolled out an advanced system using artificial intelligence (AI) to detect traffic violations, aiming to enhance road safety and reduce accidents across the emirate.
In a Gulf News report, officials revealed the full list of infractions that AI-enabled radar systems can automatically monitor, along with corresponding fines, vehicle impound periods, and black points.
Brigadier Issam Ibrahim Al Awar, Acting Deputy Director of the General Department of Traffic, and Brigadier Engineer Mohammad Ali Karam, Director of Traffic Technologies, led the announcement, highlighting how AI technology is now central in identifying dangerous driving behaviors on Dubai’s roads.
Among the violations detected by the AI-powered system are speeding, lane discipline breaches, and distracted driving. Exceeding the speed limit by over 80km/h carries the harshest penalty—a Dh3,000 fine, 60-day impoundment, and 23 black points. Speeding by over 60km/h results in a Dh2,000 fine, a 20-day impoundment, and 12 black points, with fines decreasing for lower levels of excess speed.
Running red lights is another key focus, with offenders facing a Dh1,000 fine, 30-day vehicle impoundment, and 12 black points. Failure to stay within lanes, improper use of road shoulders, and driving in the wrong direction are also tracked, with fines ranging from Dh400 to Dh1,500, depending on the violation.
AI radars also monitor common safety risks, such as not wearing a seat belt (Dh400 fine, 4 black points) and using a phone while driving (Dh800 fine, 4 black points). Additional fines apply for excessive window tinting (Dh1,500), making illegal turns (Dh500), and failing to yield to pedestrians (Dh500).
Authorities emphasized that integrating AI into traffic monitoring will allow Dubai Police to respond more effectively to violations in real-time, ensuring stricter enforcement and safer roads.
