A 26-year-old woman with complex congenital heart disease has successfully delivered a healthy baby at Medcare Royal Specialty Hospital in Al Qusais. Mrs. S. Mohammed, who previously suffered a miscarriage, overcame significant medical challenges with the support of a multidisciplinary medical team.
Born with congenital cyanotic heart disease, the mother had undergone three major heart surgeries in childhood, leading to complications such as elevated lung pressure, left heart pump dysfunction, and a residual hole in her heart. These factors made pregnancy an extreme risk, increasing the chances of miscarriage, heart failure, stroke, or even sudden death.
Seeking a second opinion at 18 weeks of pregnancy, she turned to Medcare Royal Specialty Hospital, where specialists identified more severe conditions than initially diagnosed. A dedicated team, including cardiologists, obstetricians, neonatologists, and anesthetists, closely monitored her pregnancy and developed a personalized treatment plan to manage the risks.
“Pregnancy is incredibly challenging for women with complex congenital heart disease,” said Dr. Yogeeswari Vellore Satyanarayanan, a Cardiology Specialist at Medcare. “With expert management and constant support, we were able to help this mother carry her pregnancy to term safely.”
Although natural labor was initially attempted, doctors opted for a cesarean section due to non-progression. The procedure resulted in the safe delivery of a baby boy weighing 2.5 kilograms. Postpartum recovery remained a critical phase, requiring extended medical supervision to stabilize her condition.
Dr. Sabeena Sadath, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology at Medcare Sharjah, highlighted the complexity of the case. “This was a remarkable achievement that required multidisciplinary expertise and continuous monitoring. The teamwork between our specialists ensured the best outcome for both mother and baby.”
Expressing gratitude for the medical team’s unwavering support, the mother said, “I am incredibly thankful to Dr. Yogeeswari and the entire team at Medcare. This has been a challenging but miraculous journey, and I am forever grateful.”
