Over 20 billion robots to serve humans by 2050, UAE minister predicts

More than 20 billion robots will be assisting humans by 2050, reshaping industries, labor markets, and everyday life, according to Mohammad Abdullah Al Gergawi, UAE Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the World Government Summit.

Speaking at the 2025 World Government Summit in Dubai, Al Gergawi highlighted the rapid technological evolution over the past 25 years and its impact on economies, governance, and society. He noted that while the global economy expanded from $34 trillion in 2000 to $115 trillion in 2024, traditional industries have been overtaken by digital platforms and technology-driven enterprises.

Al Gergawi emphasized key global shifts, including the rise of China and India, the growing influence of digital currencies now valued at $3 trillion, and the increasing role of AI-driven warfare. He also raised concerns about global challenges, such as displacement caused by conflicts, declining trust in governments, and the economic cost of mental health issues, which amount to $1 trillion annually.

Looking forward, he projected that by 2050, the global population will reach 10 billion, with a growing elderly demographic requiring advanced healthcare and social support. Robotics and AI will play a crucial role in addressing future challenges, while the space economy is expected to expand to $4 trillion.

The World Government Summit, which runs until February 14, brings together more than 30 heads of state, 140 government delegations, and 6,000 participants. Key speakers include IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. A virtual discussion featuring SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk is also scheduled.
