Surviving a life-threatening illness while being far from home is a battle that requires immense strength, faith, and resilience. For many, a cancer diagnosis is already overwhelming—but facing it alone in a foreign country, without financial security, makes the fight even tougher. This became a reality for UAE-based Filipina Thelma Susano when she was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer on December 28, 2020. What followed was a series of hardships that turned her life upside down, from losing her job and insurance to navigating treatment in the midst of uncertainty. Yet, through unwavering faith and determination, she found not only survival but also a renewed sense of purpose.
In mid-October 2020, Thelma discovered a lump in her breast while taking a shower. Initially, she thought it was related to her menstrual cycle, but when it persisted, she decided to seek medical attention. Despite her fear of hospitals, she underwent a series of scans and, eventually, a biopsy. The result confirmed her worst fear—she had a malignant tumor.
“When I heard the news, I was composed, and I know it’s because God gave me the strength that I needed,” she shared with The Global Filipino Magazine.

The diagnosis drastically changed her life. Shortly after, her company terminated her employment and canceled her insurance, leaving her with no job or financial security. “It changed my life 360 degrees. No job, the pandemic made the world uncertain, and I had cancer,” she recalled. “Negative thoughts, fear, and dismay came knocking on my door, but God showed me how powerful He is.”
Facing the battle alone
Living in Dubai for 14 years, Thelma did not have immediate family around to support her. However, she found solace in the unwavering faith she had built over the years. Her church family, friends, and her children back home became her pillars of strength.
“I don’t have the right to be weak because of them,” she said. “And I am blessed with a friend who took care of me from the time of my surgery until I gained my strength again.”
The financial burden of her treatment drained her savings. Despite this, she found ways to cope and remain hopeful. “God provided for my every need,” she added.
As she recovered, Thelma realized that keeping herself busy was crucial to maintaining a positive mindset. She turned to arts and crafts, discovering a newfound talent for cross-stitch, jesmonite art, and soy-scented candle making.
“Selling my soy-scented candles and jesmonite helped me earn extra income while also allowing me to help other Filipina cancer patients in my own little way,” she explained. “I also share my knowledge by teaching others how to make these candles.”
Advocating for awareness
Thelma became an advocate for cancer awareness, particularly through her involvement with organizations like Friends of Cancer Patients and Majlis Al Amal. She actively participates in campaigns, sharing her story to inspire others and emphasize the importance of regular check-ups.
“They invited me to various occasions to talk about my journey and the importance of early detection,” she said. “I also participate in fundraising campaigns to support fellow cancer warriors.”
Beyond personal survival, Thelma remains deeply grateful to the UAE, particularly for the assistance she received through Tawam Hospital when her company abandoned her.

“It is important for me to personally hand over my art piece to His Highness as a token of gratitude,” she expressed. “He might not know me, but he helped me in times of need when my company could not.”
For Thelma, the piece she created is more than just a gift—it represents all cancer patients and survivors from Friends of Cancer Patients, Majlis Al Amal, and Filipina Cancer Warriors. “God gave me this talent, and it’s time to show how grateful I am.”
A message of hope
To those battling the same struggles, Thelma offers encouragement: “Never lose hope and faith. It’s difficult to accept this ugly disease, but behind this journey, there’s always something beautiful that comes out of it.”
She emphasizes that cancer has taught her to prioritize what truly matters in life. “Life is beautiful, no matter how difficult it is. God showed me that He can move mountains and that my life is in His hands.”
“Surrender to God, and all is well. I went through hell and came back. What more can life throw at me that I cannot handle? With God, all things are possible.”
Thelma also urges people to support cancer-related foundations and awareness campaigns. She believes that awareness should not be limited to October but should be promoted year-round.
“Even in daily conversations, I take the opportunity to remind people—whether it’s a grocery store staff or a stranger—to get regular check-ups,” she shared.
