Dubai is taking bold steps toward a greener future with the launch of the Super Block initiative, an urban development plan that will transform key residential areas into car-free zones. Announced by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, the initiative aims to improve livability by prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists.
According to a Khaleej Times report, the plan will initially cover neighborhoods like Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, Al Karama, and Al Quoz Creative Zone, where roads will be redesigned to create more green spaces and recreational areas, fostering community interaction. The initiative aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which focuses on sustainable urban development.
Dubai is also enhancing pedestrian infrastructure through a 6,500km network of modern walkways across 160 districts. The Dubai Walk master plan includes 3,300km of new walkways and upgrades to 2,300km of existing paths by 2040, promoting soft mobility and reducing carbon emissions.
Additionally, the city is ramping up its afforestation efforts. In 2024, 216,500 trees were planted, increasing green cover by 57% compared to the previous year. Landscaping projects also introduced 5.3 million flower and ornamental plant seedlings.
