Strong Group Athletics (SGA) has officially withdrawn from the third-place match of the 34th Dubai International Basketball Championship, citing concerns over officiating during their semifinal loss to Tunisia on Saturday, February 1.
In a strongly worded statement, the Filipino squad expressed their frustration over what they described as “officiating inconsistencies” that significantly influenced the outcome of their 63-68 defeat.
“We at Strong Group Athletics have officially decided not to participate in the third-place game of the 34th Dubai Basketball International Championship, as we call for equality and fairness in officiating and for the game to be treated with the proper respect,” the team announced.
Controversial non-call in final Seconds
SGA pointed to multiple missed calls throughout the game, particularly during the closing moments when they had a chance to force overtime.
“The most controversial moment came in the final seconds when we were trailing 66-63. With just 4.4 seconds left on the clock, our standout Rhenz Abando launched a potential game-tying three-pointer but was clearly bodied from behind by Tunisian big man Mokhtar Ghyaza,” the statement read.
Despite the visible contact, referees did not call a foul, allowing Tunisia to secure the victory and advance to the championship round.
A stand for integrity in international basketball
While acknowledging their respect for the game, SGA emphasized that fair officiating is a crucial aspect of international competitions.
“As competitors, we respect the game and its governing principles. However, fairness and accountability are fundamental in maintaining the integrity of international basketball,” the team asserted.
The decision to skip the third-place match, they clarified, was not just about one game but about sending a message for better officiating standards in international tournaments.
“Our decision not to play in the third-place match is not just about one game—it is about advocating for officiating that upholds the spirit of sportsmanship and ensures that all teams are given a fair chance to compete,” SGA stated.
Support from fans and future plans
Despite the disappointing result, Strong Group Athletics assured their supporters that they remain committed to representing the Philippines on the global stage.
“We extend our gratitude to our supporters and assure our fans that despite this unfortunate outcome, we remain committed to representing the Philippines with pride on the global stage.”
