The Philippine delegation showcased their exceptional talent and resilience at the Waterjet World Cup 2024, held last December in Pattaya, Thailand. Competing against the world’s best, the team brought home multiple titles, proving the rising dominance of Filipinos in water sports.
This year’s delegation featured seven young athletes, aged 14 to 22, whose remarkable performances reflected their determination and discipline. Their achievements not only uplifted the Philippine flag but also underscored the potential of Filipino youth on the global stage.
Among the standouts was 14-year-old Vito Tinio, who placed fourth in the Junior 13-15 Spark Stock category. Vito, who also won the Kundang Jet Sports Malaysia Seadoo Junior Time Attack 2024, shared, “Every race was a test of grit and focus. I had to stay calm under pressure and improve with each round.”
Cody Lorenzo Pontino earned the World Champion title in the Novice Ski Stock category, highlighting his consistency throughout the competition. “Every race felt like a chance to prove what I’m capable of,” Cody said.
Meanwhile, Angelo Iñigo A. Ventus solidified his position as a global competitor, securing the prestigious Overall Triple Crown Champion title. Angelo achieved notable victories in Europe, the United States, and Thailand, demonstrating his versatility. “The global stage is exhilarating but incredibly demanding. Adaptability is key,” he noted.
Sisters Kristine Kate and Kayla Marie Povadora Mercado shone in the Women Runabout 1100 Stock category. Kristine claimed the Triple Crown Champion title, while Kayla earned second place in the series. “It’s about representing the Philippines and inspiring others,” Kristine shared, with Kayla adding, “Being part of this journey with my sister made the experience even more special.”
Other commendable performances included Marchael Louie Buhisan, who placed second in Endurance Open and third in Pro-Am 1100 Open, and Jesse Arcilla, one of the youngest riders, who gained valuable experience racing alongside seasoned athletes.
Their coach praised the team’s unwavering dedication and adaptability, saying, “They’ve shown that Filipino youth can thrive under pressure and excel on the world stage.”
