Teachers in PH renew call for P50,000 monthly salary amid rising costs

Educators reiterated their call for the government to raise teachers’ entry-level monthly salaries to ₱50,000 this year, citing the increasing cost of basic commodities. The renewed push comes after a similar plea in 2024 failed to materialize.

Raymond Basilio, secretary-general of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT), emphasized in an ABS-CBN News report the financial strain teachers face. “Many of our teachers are surviving by renewing their debts,” he said during a press conference, noting that ₱50,000 is a reasonable request given the economic landscape.

Last year, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed Executive Order No. 64, which adjusted the salaries of government workers, including public school teachers. However, ACT chairperson Vladimer Quetua pointed out that the increase amounted to only ₱50 per day for educators.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara acknowledged in 2024 that a ₱50,000 salary might only be feasible if the country’s fiscal conditions improve. Despite his pledge to advocate for salary increases, the DepEd budget for 2025 was slashed by ₱12 billion, further frustrating educators.

ACT regional president Ruby Bernardo highlighted the challenges teachers face, including overcrowded classrooms, insufficient non-teaching personnel, and high living costs. “Teachers cannot provide quality education under these conditions,” she said, noting that some classes in Metro Manila have as many as 90 students.

The group urged DepEd to consult teachers when drafting the 2026 budget to ensure it addresses their needs. “We challenge Secretary Angara to deliver on his promise of transformative leadership,” Basilio said.
