Marcos confident PH-US ties will remain strong beyond US leadership change

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed confidence in the continued strength and dynamism of the Philippines-US relationship, even as the United States prepares for a transition in leadership.

In a recent phone call with US Vice President Kamala Harris, Marcos highlighted the significant progress in bilateral relations across various sectors, including economics, diplomacy, and defense.

“Our relationship spans every level—economic, diplomatic, and defense and security—and the progress we’ve made is encouraging. We aim to build on this foundation while upholding shared values and international law,” said Marcos.

Harris, meanwhile, reiterated bipartisan support in the US Congress for enhancing ties with the Philippines, particularly in security and economic collaboration. She also underscored the importance of trilateral cooperation with Japan in promoting regional security and economic stability.

The Philippines and the US have maintained a longstanding alliance since formal diplomatic relations were established in 1946. Their defense partnership is anchored on key agreements, including the Mutual Defense Treaty, the Visiting Forces Agreement, and the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement.

The call was part of ongoing engagements between US leaders and international allies as President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris prepare to conclude their terms on January 20. Marcos had earlier joined a trilateral discussion with Biden and Japan Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, focusing on enhancing regional security and economic cooperation.
