PH passes bill setting fixed four-year terms for barangay, SK officials

The Senate approved on third and final reading Senate Bill No. 2816 on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. The measure, which sets the term of office for barangay officials and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) members, received unanimous support from 22 senators, with no abstentions or objections.

Senator Imee R. Marcos, the bill’s sponsor, highlighted its benefits, stating, “With the longer fixed term, barangay officials and SK members will gain a deeper understanding of national and local issues and implement medium- and long-term initiatives at the barangay level.”

The proposed legislation outlines a four-year term for all elected barangay and SK officials, with a limit of three consecutive terms in the same position. It specifies that voluntary resignation will not break the continuity of the term.

The bill also schedules the next barangay and SK elections for October 2027 and every four years thereafter. Terms for newly elected officials will begin on November 1 following the elections.

If enacted, current barangay and SK officials will remain in office until their successors are elected and qualified, except those serving their third consecutive term, who will be barred from seeking the same position in 2027.
