The Embraer 190 aircraft, flight J2-8243, was en route from Baku to Grozny in Russia’s Chechnya region when it was forced to make an emergency landing about 3 kilometers from Aktau. Fog in Grozny reportedly caused the plane to reroute, Russian news agencies said.
Unverified video footage circulating online showed the aircraft bursting into flames upon impact, with thick black smoke rising from the crash site. Kazakh media reported that 62 passengers and five crew members were on board, though these figures remain unconfirmed.
Azerbaijan Airlines has yet to release a statement regarding the incident.
