Filipino educator becomes ambassador teacher in Virginia, inspired by Bahrain’s warmth and friendships

A mixture of emotions filled the departure area of Bahrain International Airport with unstoppable photo opportunity, the last-minute advice amidst the clattering of rolling suitcases where friends, co-teachers, and family member gathered to bid farewell to Ruth Mirhan Orense as she prepared for her journey to Virginia, USA.

Ruth, an inspiring educator with a passion for teaching, had secured a coveted spot in an exchange program that would take her across the globe. The excitement of new opportunities ahead was palpable, yet the bittersweet feeling of leaving behind those she cherished was equally present.

Her son, Errol John, stood closed by, sharing in the emotions of the moment as he offered his own heartfelt farewell. Friends and colleagues showered Ruth with last-minute advice, reminding her to embrace every moment of her journey and to carry the spirit of Bahrain with her.

As she sank into her seat on the plane, an overwhelming surge of emotion welled up in her—excitement bordered by anxiety—and her heart skipped beats at the countless new experiences lying ahead.

The flight to Virginia felt like a flight into home; her mind engulfed with pictures of beautiful scenery and warm hospitality ahead.  In her imagination, the bustling atmosphere that provides a sharp contrast to the serene desert landscapes of Bahrain, where she spent 17 years of her life.

As the plane touched down, she took a deep breath, bracing herself, she gazed out the window, ready to face whatever beyond the clouds.

Being selected as an Ambassador Teacher at John W. Tolbert Elementary School in Loudon County Public School District feels like hitting the jackpot. It represents not just a recognition of her extreme efforts but a culmination of countless hours of hard work, preparation, and unwavering faith. 

Ruth expressed profound gratitude to Participate Learning for the opportunity that has significantly altered her personal and professional path.

She viewed the exchange program as enhancing the value of such a platform for cross-cultural understanding and collaboration. ‘’The program will expose you to another culture for fresh insights and approaches, which you could then apply in your own context, which will turn out to be a fine way to stir up innovative ideas and solidify global networks, she said. 

While being an educator is one of those careers that brings satisfaction in return, making a positive contribution to the financial stability of a family, despite challenges faced by educators.

Born in Manila, her heart found resonance in the serene lifestyles of the Mangyan community in Oriental Mindoro.  She was inspired with their way of life that is deeply rooted in simplicity connection, and respect for the environment. 

Ruth earned her degree in Bachelor in Elementary Education at Abada College, Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro and continued her Master of Art in Education major in Administration and Supervision in Divine Word College of Calapan.  She is currently pursuing her Doctoral Degree in Educational Management major in Special Education in Intercontinental College.

Her role as vice president of Filipino Writers’ Circle (Filwrite) solidified her dedication to contributing to the Filipino community in Bahrain.

Filwrite under the leadership of Cecilia V. Ancheta expressed the collective pride and joy of the group in the inclusion of their fellow member for the teaching exchange program as ambassador, ”This recognition not only underscores her personal success but also a very great opportunity to expose the multifaceted culture of the Filipinos in the diversified training milieus in the United States’’.  ‘’Such an exchange is a transformational potential of education and emphasizes the signification of cross-cultural collaboration towards empowering people and inspiring them’’, she added.

By providing a space for storytelling, poetry, and essays, Filwrite not only amplifies the voices of OFWs but also fosters a sense of belongingness within a global community. It plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting the rich Filipino tradition and culture.

As Ruth reflected on her journey, she couldn’t help but feel a wave of gratitude with the thought of the people in Bahrain who opened their arms to fold her into their midst, ‘’ Bahrain was truly my second home, where friendships forged, laughters, and struggles shared with the warmth memories I would carry forever’’.

From friends who became more like family to locals introducing her to the culture, each added so much appreciation to her experience. She enjoys being surrounded by acts of politeness and hospitality; it eases challenges brought forth by being away from home.

The smiles and stories shared over coffee, the heartfelt conversations, and the collective experiences have not only shaped her identity but have also instilled in her a profound understanding of the importance of community. These memories and bonds will serve as a constant reminder of the power of connection, urging her to seek out new friendships and embrace the unfamiliar as she steps into her next adventure.
