Filipino college students design smart walking stick to aid visually impaired workers

Four computer engineering students from STI College Ortigas-Cainta have developed a walking stick equipped with advanced features to aid visually impaired individuals. Featured in 24 Oras’ “Game Changer” segment by Martin Javier, the project uses Arduino-based technology to enhance mobility and safety for its users.

The team, composed of Harold Aldaba, John Patrick Mendros, Herault Aguirre, and John Christian Marquez, drew inspiration from visually impaired massage therapists in Antipolo. “Despite their disability, they continue to work hard. That became the foundation for our walking stick,” shared Aldaba.

The walking stick includes an obstacle detection sensor that alerts users in real-time, a GPS tracker to help relatives monitor their location, and a bill identifier to recognize Philippine peso denominations—helping prevent fraud during transactions.

“Every component we used was carefully researched to ensure the user’s safety and convenience in the future,” said Aguirre. The team also conducted beta testing with massage workers in Antipolo, who provided positive feedback.
