TV host and actress Mariel Rodriguez-Padilla, wife of actor-turned-senator Robin Padilla, has no issue being called “old-fashioned” for believing that a wife should be submissive to her husband. During a candid discussion on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda,” Mariel opened up about her perspective on marriage, gender roles, and her empowering take on relationships.
“It can never really be pantay (equal), Tito Boy,” Mariel explained when asked if she believes in gender equality. “The respect for each other can be equal. But the girl should be submissive to her husband. I really believe in that. I also believe that it’s the woman who carries the relationship.”
Mariel clarified that submission doesn’t diminish women’s power. Instead, she emphasized their strength in decision-making within relationships. “Tayo ‘yung magsasabi na ito ang magaganap; ganito ‘yan. Women are so empowered. May mga bagay na tayo ang nasusunod.”
The conversation also touched on their marriage dynamics, including Robin’s religion and cultural beliefs. Mariel acknowledged that in Islam, men are permitted to marry up to four women, but she has a non-negotiable condition. “They are really allowed to marry four, but I have only one condition: it can only be me. That’s it. Everything else, I can do it, no problem,” she said.
Reflecting on their 14 years together, Mariel highlighted the importance of mutual respect and clear boundaries. Robin has always been upfront about certain untouchable aspects of his life, including his commitment to Mindanao and his children from his previous marriage. “Robin was very clear… never ko ‘yun ginagalaw,” Mariel shared, adding that Robin has worked hard to honor his promises.
At 40, Mariel expressed contentment and self-assurance. “When you’re 40, you already know who you are. Tapos ka na dun sa gusto mong patunayan pa. Now you know who you are, and that makes you comfortable.”
