The 2024 Presidential Award for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas (PAFIOO) has named Larry Carumba as one of its distinguished honorees under the “Pamana ng Pilipino Award” category. This recognition, bestowed by the Office of the President, highlights Carumba’s exceptional contributions as a visual artist and his impact on promoting Filipino culture within the Saudi Arabian art community. He will be receiving the prestigious Gawad ng Pangulo Medal from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. during the awarding ceremony on December 11, 2024, at Malacañan Palace. Additionally, Carumba will be presented with a Plaque of Recognition by the Chairperson of the Commission on Filipino Overseas (CFO).
Hailing from Victorias and Bacolod City in Negros Occidental, Carumba’s journey to success is marked by resilience, talent, and self-discovery. A graduate of business management from La Salle University and Don Bosco, he embarked on a path that would take him from the familiar landscapes of his hometown to the vibrant cultural expanse of Saudi Arabia. His initial move was motivated by the desire to provide financial stability for his family, a common narrative among overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
Carumba’s story began 32 years ago when he arrived in Saudi Arabia. Faced with the challenge of adapting to a new culture and lifestyle, he seized the opportunity to pursue activities that enriched his personal growth. It was here, in a foreign land far from the art academies of the Philippines, that he discovered his true passion. Without formal training, he spent 18 years nurturing his innate artistic abilities, ultimately becoming a self-taught visual artist whose work has captivated audiences throughout the Middle East.
Carumba’s unique journey showcases how dedication and faith can turn aspirations into reality. Driven by his commitment to personal growth and reliance on God-given talents, he developed an artistic practice that has set him apart as one of the most notable Filipino artists abroad. His work adheres to the principles of “Naturalism,” a genre known for its faithful and lifelike depictions. Carumba’s meticulous attention to detail and masterful execution make his art instantly recognizable and deeply respected in the artistic community.
At a time when surrealism dominates contemporary art galleries, Carumba’s steadfast dedication to Naturalism shines as a testament to his authenticity and vision. His devotion to capturing the world inch by inch with remarkable precision and concentration results in extraordinary pieces that resonate with viewers. Each creation by Carumba represents not just art, but a reflection of his journey, perseverance, and passion.
The PAFIOO honors individuals who exemplify outstanding achievements that contribute significantly to the global Filipino community. Carumba’s recognition is a testament to his leadership in art and his tireless efforts to uplift the image of Filipino talent across the Middle East. By maintaining a commitment to excellence and cultural representation, he has not only achieved personal success but has also paved the way for the global appreciation of Filipino art and craftsmanship.
Among the awardees for the 2024 PAFIOO are other notable Filipinos including Jane Y. Gerardo-Abaya in Austria, Roberto Eusebio R. Lavides in Canada, and Melvin J. Sanicas of Switzerland, whose achievements further underscore the diverse and impactful contributions of Filipinos worldwide.
