Space enthusiasts in the UAE are set for a treat as the final supermoon of 2024 will coincide with the annual Leonids meteor shower on November 16. This celestial display promises to create a mesmerizing night sky, with the supermoon serving as a luminous backdrop to the bright streaks of meteors.
According to a Khaleej Times report, the Leonids, known for their fast-moving, bright meteors that sometimes leave persistent trails, will peak just after midnight on November 17. However, they will be visible in the early hours before dawn, continuing throughout much of the month. Experts advise finding a dark, open area away from city lights to fully enjoy the show.
While no special equipment is needed to observe the meteor shower, using a telescope can enhance views of the supermoon. This supermoon, known as the “Beaver Moon,” marks the fourth consecutive supermoon of the year, following August’s blue supermoon, September’s Harvest moon, and October’s Hunter’s moon. It will appear larger and brighter as it reaches its closest point to Earth, peaking after moonrise on November 16.
The Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG) will host a special event in Al Qudra Desert, featuring telescopes, guided stargazing, and interactive sessions to enrich the experience. According to DAG, while telescopes offer enhanced views of the supermoon, they are not ideal for tracking meteors due to their speed.
Experts from DAG and the International Astronomical Centre (IAC) noted that such events are not necessarily increasing but are gaining more attention due to heightened public interest and accessible astronomy resources. This awareness has drawn more UAE residents to appreciate and engage with the wonders of the night sky.
For those looking to capture the Leonids and supermoon on camera, DAG recommends using a tripod with a wide-angle lens, an ISO setting between 1600 and 3200, and a slow shutter speed to photograph meteor trails.
