Distracted driver triggers seven-vehicle pile-up in UAE, police issue stern warning

A major collision involving at least seven vehicles occurred in Abu Dhabi due to a distracted driver, according to a video released by Abu Dhabi Police on Friday. The footage underscores the serious consequences of inattentive driving.

In the 33-second clip, a white van can be seen speeding into a stationary line of vehicles, seemingly unaware of the traffic congestion ahead. While other cars had come to a halt, the van failed to slow down, crashing into a sedan, which then pushed into an SUV and set off a chain reaction involving other vehicles, including a delivery motorcycle on the roadside.

Abu Dhabi Police reiterated their warning to motorists: distractions, such as mobile phone use, significantly increase the risk of severe accidents. The authorities emphasized that browsing social media, making calls, or taking photos behind the wheel is highly dangerous.

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of road accidents in the UAE, punishable by an Dh800 fine and four black points on a driver’s license. In Dubai, penalties for similar offences have become stricter, including a 30-day vehicle impoundment along with fines for violations like using phones while driving, tailgating, and sudden lane changes.
