UAE photographer wins $50,000 award for bird photography book

Emirati photographer Salma Al Suwaidi has secured the prestigious ‘Photography Content Creator’ award at the 13th season of the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA), one of the world’s most lucrative photography competitions.

According to a Gulf News report, she received a $50,000 prize for her book, Common Birds and their Nests in the United Arab Emirates, which highlights the avian life across the UAE.

This special category of HIPA recognizes individuals who have made notable contributions to photography, including editors, publishers, bloggers, and innovators. The winners of the 13th season, themed around sustainability, will be formally recognized at the Museum of the Future in Dubai on November 12.

Abdul Rahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, Minister of Health and Community Protection and Chairman of the HIPA Board of Trustees, praised Al Suwaidi as an inspiration for future generations due to the artistic, scientific, and environmental importance of her work. Her book has also garnered admiration from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who commended her passion for documenting the UAE’s natural world.
