Boat owner in UAE fined Dh20,000 for exceeding daily fish catch limit

Abu Dhabi’s Environment Agency (EAD) recently imposed a Dh20,000 fine on a recreational fishing boat owner who exceeded the daily fish catch limit, Khaleej Times reported. Recreational vessels that go beyond this limit are required to hold a commercial fishing license, which many do not possess. Failing to comply with these requirements is classified as an environmental violation, subject to a fine of Dh2,000. Repeated violations can result in stricter penalties, including a one-month boat suspension for a second offense and license revocation for a third.

EAD’s regulations aim to protect Abu Dhabi’s marine ecosystem, ensuring sustainable fishing practices. Recreational boat owners are encouraged to adhere to the guidelines to support marine conservation and prevent further penalties.

The UAE enforces specific fishing seasons based on species’ breeding cycles. Fishing certain shark species, as per Ministerial Decree No. (43) of 2019, and using banned equipment like encircling nets and ‘Gargoors’ in certain waters are prohibited year-round. Additionally, other species and methods have restricted seasons to help preserve marine biodiversity.
