President Marcos declares November 4 as Day of National Mourning for storm victims

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has designated Monday, November 4, 2024, as a Day of National Mourning to honor those who lost their lives in the devastation caused by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (Trami). Through Proclamation No. 728, issued under the authority of the President by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, this day was set to express solidarity with the families of the deceased and those impacted by the disaster.

On this day, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across all government offices and installations in the Philippines and abroad, with the President encouraging the nation to pray for the victims.

The latest report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) indicated that 146 individuals have died, 91 were injured, and 19 remain missing due to the storm. Severe Tropical Storm Kristine has affected over 8.5 million people, with the highest impact in the Bicol Region, where over 3 million residents were impacted. Many displaced families have sought refuge in evacuation centers or with relatives and friends.

The storm caused significant destruction, with over 178,000 houses damaged and losses in infrastructure and agriculture amounting to approximately PHP 7.3 billion and PHP 4.4 billion, respectively.
