Single-use vapes to be banned in UK from June 2025

The sale of single-use disposable vapes will be banned in England and Wales starting June 1, 2025, as part of government efforts to protect children’s health and reduce environmental damage. The decision comes after vaping industry growth has led to concerns about youth addiction and the wastefulness of disposable devices.

While rechargeable and refillable vapes will remain available, ministers emphasized the growing popularity of single-use vapes among young adults. Disposable vapes are known for their environmental impact, with millions discarded annually, contributing to landfill waste and fires at waste-processing centers.

Health officials and experts, such as paediatric respiratory consultant Dr. Claire Hogg, have welcomed the ban, highlighting the alarming rise in nicotine addiction among children. However, vaping industry leaders have warned that the ban could lead to an increase in illegal sales, urging the government to introduce a licensing scheme instead.

The government will work closely with devolved nations, with Wales aligning its ban date. Similar measures are being considered in other countries, including Ireland and Belgium.
