Filipino barista in coma after being found unconscious and bloodied in Saudi Arabia

A Filipino barista in Saudi Arabia is in a coma after being discovered unconscious and severely injured on a road near his residence. The victim, Jayson Calope, was found bloodied, and his family in the Philippines is seeking answers regarding the incident.

According to Louie Jay Calope, Jayson’s brother, CCTV footage appears to show the victim attempting to escape from someone before sustaining his injuries. “Nakita daw na tumalon yung kapatid ko kasi nanlaban, kasi gustong kumawala,” Louie said in a 24 Oras report, adding that Jayson’s wallet and cellphone were missing, and he suffered severe head trauma.

Jayson’s aunt, Elsa Morabe, expressed disbelief and grief, stating that her nephew was a gentle and friendly person. “We cannot accept what happened to him,” she said.

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) reported that initial information suggests Jayson may have fallen from a moving vehicle, but Saudi authorities are still investigating. “Hinihintay natin yung police report kung ano talaga yung nangyari,” said OWWA Operation Center Director II Atty. Sherilyn Malonzo. She confirmed that Jayson had been declared brain dead upon arrival at the hospital but later underwent successful surgery.

OWWA has assured the family that it will assist with Jayson’s repatriation, provide medical support, and offer further assistance to his family during this difficult time.
