Over 800 positions abolished at MIAA amid NAIA handover, no workers displaced

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) confirmed that no workers were displaced after over 800 permanent positions were abolished as part of its transition to becoming solely a regulatory body for the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

MIAA General Manager Eric Ines announced earlier this week that a total of 844 plantilla positions were eliminated as the agency handed over operations and management of NAIA to the San Miguel-led New NAIA Infrastructure Corporation (NNIC) on September 14, 2024.

Despite the abolition, Ines clarified in an interview that fewer than 500 of these positions were occupied, and those affected have been transferred to the NNIC as part of a concession agreement. He emphasized that “definitely no displacement” occurred, and employees received Separation Incentive Pay (SIP) as part of their transition package.

The move follows reassurances from Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista earlier this year that no MIAA personnel would be displaced in the handover. MIAA has submitted a new organizational structure to the Governance Commission for GOCCs for approval, aiming to streamline its regulatory functions over NAIA.
