Two women from southern California were removed from a Spirit Airlines flight after a dispute over their attire. Tara Kehidi and Teresa Araujo were preparing to fly from Los Angeles to New Orleans when a flight attendant told them to leave the plane because they were wearing crop tops.
Initially, both women were wearing sweaters when they boarded, but removed them due to a lack of air conditioning onboard. According to Kehidi, their outfits revealed only “a little bit of stomach,” but the male flight attendant insisted they put their sweaters back on. When they asked to see a dress code policy, the request escalated into their removal from the flight.
A fellow passenger, Carla Hager, who was also wearing a crop top under her sweater, supported the women by removing her own sweater, stating: “If they’re kicking you off, then they’re going to have to kick me and my toddler off as well.” Hager and her child were also removed.
Although the women offered to put their sweaters back on, the group was escorted off the flight without a refund. Spirit Airlines later issued a statement saying they were reviewing the incident and cited their clothing standards, which prohibit “inadequate” or “offensive” attire.
The women ultimately spent $1,000 on a Delta flight to reach New Orleans, where they planned to celebrate Kehidi’s 30th birthday. They are now considering legal action against Spirit Airlines.
