148 dead as Nepal landslides bury vehicles, rescue efforts ongoing

Rescuers in Nepal are racing against time to recover bodies from vehicles buried in landslides near Kathmandu, as the death toll from severe flooding and landslides has climbed to 148, with dozens still missing, Reuters reported. The natural disaster, triggered by three days of intense monsoon rains, has caused widespread devastation.

On Sunday, rescue teams retrieved 14 bodies from two buses buried by a landslide on their way to Kathmandu. An additional 23 bodies were recovered from vehicles in the same area, just 16 kilometers from the capital, as search efforts continue for more possible victims.

Officials reported that 101 people have been injured, while 50 remain missing. The death toll is expected to rise as more reports come in from remote villages across the country. Kathmandu remains cut off, with landslides blocking the city’s main highways.

In southern Kathmandu, which was heavily flooded, residents have begun cleanup efforts as floodwaters recede. The capital has seen at least 34 deaths, making it one of the worst-hit areas.
