Human rights lawyer Atty. Chel Diokno has been declared as the first nominee of the Akbayan partylist for the upcoming 2025 elections. In a statement released Saturday, Diokno expressed his commitment to representing Akbayan’s principles and advocating for the Filipino people’s welfare.
“It is an honor to represent Akbayan and push for its principles and buckle down on protecting the welfare of the Filipino people, upholding our democracy, and holding the corrupt accountable,” Diokno said.
Initially considered for Akbayan’s senatorial slate, Diokno explained that after careful reflection, the decision to run under the partylist system was made to effectively challenge corruption and injustice. “Running under the partylist system is not only a principled choice but also the most pragmatic path,” he added.
Despite his nomination, Diokno emphasized Akbayan’s continued support for opposition senatorial candidates, including former Senators Kiko Pangilinan and Bam Aquino.
“Akbayan remains steadfast in backing Senators Bam Aquino and Kiko Pangilinan. We fully support Senator Risa Hontiveros’ two Senate candidates, and as we campaign for them, we will also work to secure at least three seats for the party,” he noted.
Alongside Diokno, current Representative Perci Cendaña, a former Commissioner for Luzon of the National Youth Commission, will serve as Akbayan’s second nominee.
