Solo travel is on the rise, with younger generations, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, driving the demand. A report by American Express Travel revealed that 76% of Millennials and Gen Z travelers plan to embark on solo trips in 2024, compared to 69% of all respondents. Younger travelers are increasingly eager to create their own itineraries and explore new destinations at their own pace.
In response to this growing trend, Airbnb has observed a significant rise in solo travel among Filipinos. The platform reported a 33% increase in private room bookings last year. To accommodate this demand, Airbnb has introduced a Solo Traveler Safety feature, available in various languages, including Tagalog.
For Filipinos seeking solo travel destinations, several countries stand out as safe and accessible options:
Thailand
Travel blogger Nina Fuentes recommends Thailand as an ideal starting point for solo travelers. “Even without speaking Thai, visitors can easily navigate their way around,” Fuentes shared in a L!fe report. She highlights the country’s robust tourism infrastructure and affordable street food, making it a practical choice for first-timers.
Taiwan
With its easy-to-navigate public transportation and friendly locals, Taiwan is highly recommended for solo travelers. Christine Fernandez noted that solo female travelers find Taiwan particularly safe. “The people are kind and polite,” she said in a L!fe report, adding that Taiwan’s excellent transport system allows easy access to nature spots and cultural landmarks.
Vietnam
Known for its affordability, Vietnam is another great destination for solo travelers. Monique Tendencia shared that accommodations and meals can be found at very low prices. “Vietnam is inexpensive, and the food is always of quality,” Tendencia remarked in a L!fe report, adding that the slow pace of life in Vietnam allows for a more relaxed travel experience.
Japan
Solo travel in Japan is popular due to the country’s efficient public transportation system and the safety it offers. Travel content creator Kenneth Surat emphasized that Japan is a top choice for solo travelers because of its organized infrastructure. “Once you get the hang of it, you can navigate the country with ease,” he said in a L!fe report.
For those venturing outside Asia, cities like Prague in the Czech Republic and Lisbon in Portugal are also recommended. However, Filipino solo travelers should be mindful of the higher costs and visa requirements when planning trips to Europe.
