New emojis, including exhausted face with eye bags, to roll out in 2025

An emoji that represents many of us—an exhausted face with bags under its eyes—is finally on its way. This is just one of the eight new emojis set to appear on smartphones and computers next year.

Other new emojis include a root vegetable, a harp, a leafless tree, a fingerprint, a shovel, a purple splatter, and a flag for Sark, a small island in the English Channel.

Emojipedia, an emoji reference site, shared sample images earlier this year, and the Unicode Consortium, which oversees global emoji standards, recently approved them. According to Emojipedia, smartphone users can expect to see the new emojis on various devices starting later this year and throughout 2025.

The exhausted face emoji was the fan favorite, winning the “most anticipated” category at the World Emoji Awards, with over 60% of the votes. Meanwhile, the purple splatter and shovel emojis took second and third places, respectively.

The leafless tree emoji, submitted by Brian Baihaki, is meant to highlight the growing issue of drought and climate change. “Drought is a natural part of the climate cycle, but as the climate changes, droughts are becoming more severe and widespread,” Baihaki explained in his submission.

Different platforms, like Apple and Android, may have their own interpretations of these new emojis, a process that has led to minor controversies in the past, such as Google’s misplacement of foam on its beer emoji.
