Well-known Filipino cardiologist and health advocate Doc Willie Ong recently took to Facebook to share his personal struggle with cancer. Diagnosed with a rare and aggressive abdominal sarcoma, he revealed his frustration with the state of healthcare accessibility in the Philippines. While he considers himself fortunate to receive top-notch medical care and have the support of his family, he voiced deep concern for the millions of Filipinos who are unable to access such treatment.
“What stresses, angers, and hurts me the most is that I know millions of Filipinos can never avail of such treatment. I cry for this injustice,” Ong wrote. He emphasized his desire to help raise awareness about cancer and other serious illnesses, allowing vloggers and media to use his videos to spread his message.
Ong remains hopeful, promising to dedicate his life to advocating for better healthcare for underprivileged Filipinos if he recovers. Despite the pain and challenges he faces, he continues to express his unconditional love for his fellow countrymen, stating, “Even if you bash and hurt me, I will still help you.”
