Surigao Rep. Robert Ace Barbers has criticized former Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque for accusing lawmakers of damaging his family after an investigation questioned his joint bank account with his aide, AR Dela Serna, a former Mr. Supranational.
Barbers, the lead chairperson of the House Quad Committee, responded to Roque’s claims, stating, “Hindi naman kami yung gumawa nung joint account ninyo tapos ngayon sasabihin kami ang nang-wasak sa pamilya mo.” He emphasized that Roque should “ask himself” instead of blaming the lawmakers.
Roque had raised concerns about the congressional panel probing the relationship between him and Dela Serna after discovering a joint account containing millions of pesos. Barbers, however, clarified that they were merely doing their duty to investigate.
The inquiry has also summoned Roque’s wife, Myla, as she was named an incorporator in a company allegedly linked to illegal gambling activities.
Barbers added that Roque cannot claim privacy rights during a congressional probe, referencing a Supreme Court ruling that prioritizes public access to information. Roque has been cited in contempt for failing to submit requested documents.
Barbers concluded, “Siguro dapat magpaliwanag sila. Hindi naman sila inaakusahan… Gusto lang natin marinig yung kanilang panig.”
