The UAE is set to witness an extraordinary celestial event, as this year’s largest and brightest supermoon will also be a Blue Moon. The event, scheduled for August 31, has been described as a “once-in-a-blue-moon” phenomenon.
A supermoon occurs when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, known as the perigee, making it appear larger than usual. A Blue Moon refers to the occurrence of two full moons in a single calendar month. Combining both, the Super Blue Moon will not only appear bigger but also be the second full moon of the month, the first having occurred on August 1.
According to NASA, while supermoons happen about three to four times a year, only 3% of all full moons are Blue Moons. The average frequency of Super Blue Moons is about once every 10 years, although this can vary up to 20 years. The next Super Blue Moon is expected to occur in a pair in January and March of 2037.
Where to watch
For those interested in taking a closer look, telescopes can provide an enhanced viewing experience. Darker locations, such as the desert, are ideal for clearer observation. Various paid events for guided tours of the Super Blue Moon are available throughout the UAE. The Dubai Astronomy Group, for example, is hosting an event at the Al Thuraya Astronomy Centre, with ticket prices starting at Dh60 for adults.
Quick facts
What is a supermoon? The Moon appears larger when it is at its closest point to Earth, known as the perigee.
What is a Blue Moon? Contrary to its name, the Moon does not turn blue. A Blue Moon occurs when two full moons happen in the same calendar month.
In a rare exception, NASA notes that the Moon can appear blue if tiny particles in the air scatter away red wavelengths of light.
Don’t miss this rare celestial event that combines the beauty and wonder of both a supermoon and a Blue Moon. Mark your calendars and look up to the sky tomorrow night!
