A construction worker was killed by his neighbor after a heated argument over a volleyball game bet in Barangay Budbud, Barili town, southern Cebu, on Tuesday night.
According to a The Manila Bulletin report, the victim, identified as Jonathan Selitona Ubas, was driving home with his common-law partner from the Barili Public Market when his 40-year-old neighbor, Ruel Luna Curay, ambushed him with a sickle near their residence. The attack left Ubas with fatal hack wounds to his head, neck, and other parts of his body.
A concerned resident alerted the police at around 9:05 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Ubas already dead. The weapon used in the attack, a farming sickle, was recovered, and Curay surrendered to authorities shortly after.
Investigations revealed that the two men had an earlier confrontation that day over a volleyball bet, which escalated when Ubas allegedly assaulted Curay. Curay is now in police custody and faces murder charges.
