HMD launches Barbie flip phone in signature pink for retro enthusiasts

HMD, the manufacturer of Nokia phones, has introduced a Barbie flip phone in the doll’s iconic pink hue. Embracing a nostalgic Y2K design, this new device focuses on basic functions like calling and texting, without internet or social media apps.

This collaboration with Mattel, the maker of Barbie, brings a hot pink flip phone adorned with a bold “Barbie” logo on the back, reflecting the iconic doll’s signature style. When powered on, the phone greets users with a cheerful “Hi Barbie!”

The absence of internet and social media features aims to encourage users to “disconnect to reconnect.” Lars Silberbauer, HMD’s Chief Marketing Officer, highlighted that the phone is perfect for those looking to step away from constant online engagement and enjoy a bit of retro fun.

The Barbie flip phone also includes a 0.3-megapixel camera with a flash torch for capturing “Y2K style” photos, complete with Barbie-themed frames. While users won’t find apps like Instagram on this device, they can enjoy built-in apps such as Malibu Snake, Digital Balance Tips, and Barbie Meditation.

In line with Barbie’s playful style, the phone comes with interchangeable back covers, stickers, gems, and a beaded phone strap with charms, all packed in a jewelry box. Currently available in the U.K. for £99 ($130), the phone is expected to launch in the U.S. soon.

The resurgence of Barbie’s popularity was sparked by the success of Greta Gerwig’s 2023 film, which became the highest-grossing release of the year, earning $1.4 billion globally and receiving numerous award nominations and wins.
