A Filipino-American officer of the San Diego Police Department, Austin Machitar, 30, was killed on Monday after a vehicle collided with his patrol car during a response to a car chase on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.

California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his condolences, stating, “Jennifer and I are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Officer Machitar. His loved ones, friends, and colleagues at the San Diego Police Department are in our hearts during this difficult time.”

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria also mourned the loss, highlighting Machitar’s dedication to the community. “Our city mourns the tragic loss of one of San Diego’s finest, Officer Austin Machitar. His distinguished service to our city made him a hero,” Gloria said. He also expressed hopes for Officer Martinez’s recovery.
