Qatar hosts 2nd Philippine choral festival featuring Maharlikans Vocal Ensemble

The 2nd Philippine Choral Festival, “Harmonic Horizons: Voices in Unity,” is set to take center stage at the QNCC Auditorium 3 on September 6, 2024. This eagerly anticipated event promises to bring together diverse voices and cultures, creating a bridge between Qatar’s multicultural landscape and the rich musical heritage of the Philippines.

From 5 PM to 9 PM, the festival will showcase the harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary Filipino music, presented by the Maharlikans Vocal Ensemble Philippines (MVEP). Founded in 2016, MVEP is renowned for its emotive interpretations and dedication to promoting Filipino musical artistry. Their performances have captivated audiences across Qatar, and they are celebrated as the first Filipino community choir recognized by the Philippine Embassy in Qatar.

The festival aims to foster unity and understanding through music, offering audiences a unique opportunity to experience the cultural mosaic of the Philippines. It also serves as a platform for cultural exchange, highlighting the diverse artistic expressions found within Qatar’s expatriate communities.

The Maharlikans Vocal Ensemble, the major performer of the festival, is set to mesmerize attendees with their repertoire, which includes both traditional Filipino songs and modern compositions. The ensemble’s achievements are notable—they have won the Qatar National Music Competition in the Adult Mixed Choir Category, performed at prestigious venues such as the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum, and were the first Filipino choir to become members of the Qatar Philharmonic Chorus.

The festival will also feature performances from distinguished guest choirs and musical groups, including the Qatar Concert Choir, Doha Players, Tanghalang Overseas Pinoy, Liahona Doha Singers, and Sacred Voices. Each group brings its unique style and cultural background to the stage, enriching the festival’s celebration of music and cultural diversity.

A night of musical excellence

The Qatar Concert Choir, known for its rigorous audition process and diverse membership from over 30 countries, will perform traditional and contemporary Arabic music. This inclusion underscores the festival’s mission to blend different musical traditions and foster cultural connections.

The Doha Players, a community theater group established in 1954, will bring their experience and theatrical flair to the event. Similarly, Tanghalang Overseas Pinoy, a theater group formed in 2005, will showcase the vibrant culture and artistic talents of Filipino expatriates in Qatar, reflecting the rich heritage and contemporary experiences of the Filipino diaspora.

Adding to the diverse lineup are the Liahona Doha Singers and Sacred Voices. The Liahona Doha Singers, a diverse choir group, will perform pieces that promote harmony and goodwill, while Sacred Voices, a premier Filipino choir in Qatar founded by expatriates, will share their passion for music and community.
